Leadville Facts and Figures

Leadville’s colorful early history is that of the early days of mining: hardscrabble prospectors and ruthless mine barons; the boom and bust economy with its stories of rags to riches (and many times back to rags); and tragic tales of violent death deep below the ground. The Mays department store chain, the Guggenheim fortune, the Unsinkable Molly Brown of Titanic fame — all got their start right here in Leadville.

In 1882 the Tabor Opera House hosted none other than Oscar Wilde on his lecture tour of the West. Wilde later recounted a visit to one of our local saloons where, he wrote, “I saw the only effective method of art criticism I have ever come across. Over the piano was printed a notice: ‘Please do not shoot the piano player. He is doing the best he can’.”

If it’s western history you want, find out about the many wild-west gunfights that took place here. Indeed, none other than Doc Holliday, quite possibly the most feared gunfighter in the west, walked our streets, frequented our saloons, and fought his last gunfight right here. No matter where you go in Leadville, you’re walking into history!

On any given day you will struggle to choose from rock or ice climbing, mountaineering, hiking, trail running, camping, road– or mountain-biking, four-wheeling, deer or elk hunting, fly fishing, rafting, canoeing, kayaking, alpine or Nordic downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, dog sledding … (whew!) … or just find your own thing and go for it. It’s all right here … in Leadville, Colorado USA.
