Frequently
Asked Questions
Q: How far is Ski
Cooper?
A: Ski Cooper is
only 10 miles away. Our guests also enjoy skiing
at Copper Mountain (24 miles), Vail and Beaver
Creek (38 miles), and a number of other nearby
ski areas.
Q: Do you sell ski
passes?
A: Yes, we do! We
sell discounted full-day passes for Ski Cooper,
both child and adult, at a significant discount.
These passes are priced so low that we can only
accept cash, as credit card transactions would
result in a loss.
Q: Is there
anything else to see other than mountains?
A: While the
rugged grandeur of the Rocky Mountains dominates
and defines our landscape, yes, there is plenty
to see and do that doesn’t involve mountains.
Absolutely. For starters, the headwaters of the
Arkansas River, one of the longest in the U.S.,
is just north of town, where you can actually
step over it; drive 15 minutes south of town and
you can enjoy world-class fly-fishing in its
quiet eddies; another 15 minutes south and you
will land at the doorstep of more than 25
rafting outfitters that will take you down its
wild rapids. And that’s just for starters.
Leadville and Lake County are chock full of
western, mining, Victorian, and Native American
history, as well as natural beauty, abundant
wildlife, and an eye-popping variety of alpine
flowers.
Q: How many
museums are there in Leadville?
A: Our little
Victorian mining town of 2000 (once over 30,000)
has 7 museums, all within walking distance. For
a list of local museums,
go here.
Q: Do you have a
continental breakfast?
A: No, we do not.
There are a number of unique restaurants serving
breakfast within easy walking distance, and most
people prefer to get out early and enjoy our
alpine sunrise and clean mountain air.
Q: Why do I need
to bring a jacket if I’m coming in July?
A: Even on a
summer afternoon, it can be quite chilly in the
high altitude alpine environment of the Colorado
Rockies. Summer nights can be downright cold, so
you’ll definitely want a jacket after sunset.
Q: How high is
Leadville? Is it the highest city in the world?
A: Leadville lies
in an alpine valley at an elevation of 10,152
feet above sea level. Leadville is almost
entirely surrounded by the 13– and 14,000-foot
high ranges of the Rocky Mountains. To the west,
the imposing Sawatch Range is home to Mount
Elbert (14,433’) and Mount Massive (14,421’),
the highest mountains in Colorado; the second
and third highest in the Lower 48. Leadville is
the highest city in the United States, but not
the highest in the world; although you’d have to
travel to South America, Nepal, or Tibet to find
higher cities.
